At the age of nine years old, her family was living in Louisiana, where she won a regional talent contest with a cover of Patsy Montana's "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart. Decker had relocated to Georgia by the time she was 15. She was writing her first songs and she was making regular trips to Nashville as she toured the offices of record labels and music publishers, looking for something to sign. She was just 17 when she was spotted by an independent label representative Big Yellow Dog Records who began shopping her songs to various labels and artists. Wanted, a song that was on the album made it to the Top 40 singles chart. Decker was always a Country performer, but the album was released and promoted was designed with pop audiences in mind. Two more singles off the album stiffed Decker battled with label executives for greater control of her music. her subsequent track Boys in the Summer was a more country-oriented release. Decker made her debut album under two names: Sweet American Dreams or Daughter of a Gypsy. Mercury decided to put it back on the shelf after the first three singles failed to make it onto the country charts. Decker then was let be released from her contract.
